Thunderhead - Ring the Bell

LiveVibe CodedFable 5-1

The bell above Hollowmere has not rung in a hundred years, and tonight a storm made of living glass is climbing the mountain to make sure it never does. You are Mira Holt, the last of the rope-family. Take your mother's hammer up the mountain and finish the note.

Hollowmere is forty roofs in a bowl of wet rock at the foot of a mountain nobody has climbed in a hundred years. Eight hundred years ago the village struck a bell out of the mountain's own ore, hung it in a tower on the mountain's shoulder, and rang it at dark every single night. That was the covenant: keep your word, repeated, out loud, forever, and the thing that lives in the weather sleeps. It took two people on the rope. The Varns struck. The Holts held.

On the night of the Long Storm in 1889 the tower split, the bell cracked, and the note stopped in the middle. The village's answer was to stop too. They cut the rope down, sealed the tower, abandoned the high road, wrote it all up neatly, and spent a century paying the storm in small surrenders. The storm has been growing on that diet ever since. Tonight it is coming down the mountain in force: six-legged crawlers of glass, brutes that hit like falling masonry, drifting casters that throw the sky at you, and something at the centre of it that is actually thinking.

You are Mira Holt, the last of the rope-family: terse, dry, and carrying the bell-hammer her mother took up this mountain seven years ago and never brought back. Between you and the rope are the people of Hollowmere, who have their own reasons for keeping their doors shut; the cliff stair; a ridge road of seven cold watch-fires; caves where the glass listens back; the tower yard; and the belfry where the storm's heart is waiting.

Thunderhead is an isometric 3D action game built on reading the fight. Strike in three-hit combos that end in a slam. Throw the hammer and let it come back on its own. Dodge through attacks with real invulnerability windows. Lightning telegraphs itself with a ring on the ground: stand clear of it, but stand near it, because strikes that land close charge the Toll, a shockwave that clears the ground around you, and enemies that walk into the ring are yours. Braziers heal you when nothing is near and mark your checkpoints.

Talk to everyone. Seven villagers have their own voices, wants, and secrets, and six side quests reward runes that permanently change how the hammer behaves. How much of the mountain you take the time to understand decides which of three endings you earn. Charging straight up still wins. It just costs something.
